GOP Plan to Sunset Medicare, Social Security Threatens Seniors on the Treasure Coast

Medicare and Social Security retain their popularity across around the state, but Republicans are heading into the 2022 midterm elections with a plan to sunset all federal legislation – including the two programs – after five years. The plan, spearheaded by Florida Senator Rick Scott, would hurt thousands of residents on the Treasure Coast.

The impact of the plan on seniors and disabled workers would be disastrous, as 4.6 million Floridians rely on Medicare for their health coverage. Some 4.8 million Floridians receive Social Security benefits each month to cover everything from rent to putting food on the table.

As Republicans continue these attacks, President Biden and Democrats are aiming to reduce deficits without touching Medicare and Social Security. The Biden plan would make the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share in taxes while also lowering costs for working families.

Here in St. Lucie County, Democrats have come together to send a very clear message: Protect Medicare and Social Security and reject GOP efforts to phase them out. Republicans have attempted to scale back these hard-earned benefits for decades. Democrats are committed in 2022 to make sure their latest attempt does not succeed.
