As Disaster Insurance Spikes in FL, GOP Makes Excuses
Brian Mast thinks that your home isn’t important enough to back it in Congress. In a recent interview, the Florida Republican talked about the issue of Florida’s broken insurance markets and said that liberals only want to nationalize programs and that the private sector is the only way to fix the Homeowners insurance crisis. Perhaps the $66k in campaign donations Brian Mast has received from massive real estate investors might be clouding his judgment.
Florida’s real estate developers and insurance companies keep raising premiums, dropping customers, and have repeatedly made it harder for homeowners to sue when they break their promises and fail to pay up when disasters hit. They are the opposite of the solution to this problem, but as long as they can fill the campaign coffers of politicians like Mast, the government always seems to look the other way.
But one candidate has a plan to fix the homeowners insurance crisis and keep Florida livable. Thomas Witkop supports the Homeowners Defense Act or H.R.3997 to create a national catastrophic insurance fund to help shore up reinsurance programs and states’ insurers of last resort and restabilize insurance markets, followed by investments in disaster-proofed homes and infrastructure to reduce long-term disaster risks. His plan is not to simply beg for the private market to fix things. Thomas Witkop, like Brian Mast, believes in public service. The difference is that Thomas Witkop hasn’t been paid a fortune to betray your interests like Brian Mast has, nor would he ever accept one. Brian Mast has raised a jaw-dropping 22 million dollars while running for Congress in his career, an absurd amount of money that could have been spent helping the people of Florida, yet it gets thrown away to elect a man whose only solution seems to be running back to the corporations pulling his strings.
We need to end the homeowners insurance crisis in Florida, we can only do that through federal legislation, not by groveling to the same insurance companies that put us into this mess. Vote Thomas Witkop for someone who will act, always for the people, not someone who wants to further enrich his donors while throwing citizens under the bus.
Help us defeat Brian Mast and stand up for homeowners by making a donation to our campaign!
